Oriental Rug Cleaning
There are many types of “Oriental” style carpets and rugs. Each has a distinct way of
being cleaned and maintained.
1. Cotton Colorfast “Orientals”: Not a true oriental. Smaller ones can be
wet cleaned, many right in a washing machine.
2. Synthetic Fiber “Orientals”: A moderate grade, area rug. Most can be steam
cleaned.
3. Colorfast Genuine “Orientals”: High value and high
grade fabric. These fabrics must be cleaned and extracted
with low PH (6.5-7.5) solution and fringes cleaned with a
reducing agent and force dried.
4. Non-colorfast Genuine “Orientals”: Extremely
high value and high grade fabric. These must be cleaned using dry solvents only. The
fugitive nature of the dyes can cause disastrous effects if cleaned improperly.

How To Care For Your Oriental Rug
Rotation - To insure even wear, your oriental rug should be rotated once a year. Depending on the traffic, the rotation may vary from six months to two years.
Vacuuming - Oriental rugs, like most carpeting, should be vacuumed on a regular basis to remove dirt and restore life to the fibers. Be sure not to vacuum the fringe with your beater bar! Use the end of a vacuum hose from a canister vacuum.
Padding - A quality pad used under your rug helps protect it from dirt, wear and slippage.

Spot and Spill Procedures
Make sure that you safely and immediately clean up spots and spills before they set.
1. First, soak up the excess liquid by blotting with a clean absorbent material. Do not brush or rub the stain.
2. Then spot clean with a mild detergent-white vinegar-water solution. Do not over wet.
3. Rinse area thoroughly with water and a small amount of vinegar. Avoid wetting the rug's backing.
4. Blot dry until most of the moisture has been absorbed.
5. Allow to air dry. A fan or cool hair dryer can be used to hasten the drying process.
